So what’s NAM doing next year ???

nam-events

Well, I’m putting together a list of possibilities for 2012 but although I hate to admit this – I don’t have the monopoly on ideas and this is where you come in.

Ideas, ideas, ideas, ideas – let me have ‘em. Anything at all whether it’s a café at the end of a brilliant route, an afternoon ride to an interesting venue, somewhere you visited on your bike, or an interesting place you went with the family on holiday, or just something someone said that might be interesting – which could include a speaker for a club night too.

You don’t necessarily have to lead a group, at this stage we’re simply looking for ideas, clues and special events that might interest the club.

So let’s be ‘aving yer !

You can telephone or e-mail me, I’ll be happy to do the research if needed.

As you know we like to get a comment or two from you, whether you’re a budding journalist or not doesn’t really matter.

We want to know about that great biking holiday wherever it was.

The super week-end in Cornwall, that great biker friendly hotel or B&B, that super new route to somewhere even better, and that great pub, down by the river with home cooked pies – tell us all about it.

Anything at all “hints & tips” like how I conquered my GPS, in 100 easy stages… or how I mended a puncture, using only teaspoons and elastoplast !

“Buddy can you spare a dime?”

“Buddy can you spare a dime?”

Times are hard, only one foreign holiday this year kids, no you can’t have a new bike, new trainers because the old ones are “out of fashion”, so what’s wrong with the mobile phone you’ve already got?

Yes times are hard… but think just how hard they’d be if you happened to live in an old run down Soviet Bloc country with nothing much to start with then the local power station (nuclear by the way) blew up.

That’s what “Friends of Chernobyl’s Children” charity don’t just think about, they “do”. I’m riding the bike to Ukraine in July with a group of “Friends” and although I’ll be paying for that I am seeking sponsors – every penny will go to the charity and in turn to help the kids over there have a taste of a better life.

So if you can spare a fiver, a tenner or even more that would be great and the kids would be really grateful – honest…

Contact me, Greg Lockwood on m: 07889-609636  or e: [email protected]

“Thanks”.

To those of you that know me, & have sponsored my Chernobyl Challenge, thank you very much!
For those who wish to donate to this worthy cause, please sponsor me on line, plus (Gift Aid) is added!
The bike trip is to raise funds for “Friends of Chernobyl’s Children” (FOCC GB) a registered charity.
Anglia Television has a clip of us on their website, (see link) (I am on the LHS, second bike to ride off).
Watch the ITV (local) news bulletin over this weekend, & see about our motorcycle challenge.
Thank you again for your kind & generous donations,

Greg/Paul Lockwood.

Anyone Have This DVD? – “The Last Hurrah”

Hi

A member loaned me the book “The Last Hurrah” by Des Molloy.

A trip on old bikes (with even older riders!) from Beijing to Arnhem 2005.

There was a DVD along with the book which I’m trying to get hold of!

I would be most grateful if someone could unite me with a copy!!

Many thanks

There could be a opportunity for riders to participate in local carnivals…

Either by leading the procession or riding the route prior to the procession proper.

What’s it like, well for those who know the Headlights show it’s like the final 20 minutes run into Lowestoft.

Carnivals are generally on Saturdays or Sundays and start around lunch time.

If you are interested “in principle” let me know and I’ll pass your name on to the coordinator.

HMT specialise in bike tyres…

Hi NAM Guys

Some of you may remember NAM member Derek Cordingley recently asking about m’bike tyres and where best to go.

If you came to the NAM March meeting last year you’ll recall Paul Gluckstein of HMT Tyres and his excellent “Tyre Talk”.

Well if you didn’t – HMT specialise in bike tyres and as Derek discovered they are right on the ball.

So if you are in need – give them a try, I did last year as have many other NAM members.

NAM Rob Chandler

 Hi Everyone

Some of you will know chairman Rob had a slow speed spill yesterday (OK so far)

but unfortunately he collected a bad break in his right leg (not so good).

I’ve just spoken to him, he’s out of surgery and doing well but bike riding is off limits for a few months.

He says – buxxer at the beginning of summer too !!!.

Rob will be in the James Paget Hospital, Gt Yarmouth for a few days before going home to start getting things done.

So take note, it can happen to anyone – have fun but be careful out there – gravel hurts.

Travel Insurance Information

Hi NAM Guys and Gals

Travel Insurance Information

You’ll recall Ken was experiencing problems getting EU cover for his 20 years old Pan so he asked for help.

Well he had 29 replies (thanks to all) and Moira Hawkes came up with a solution which might be useful to you at some time.

Thanks to Ken for the question and Moira for an answer.

Regards Paul m: 07834-600665

Hi Moira

Very many thanks for your e-mail and time spent in searches.

I now know “stand alone” policies do exist and are great value, better than “add ons” to ins. policies!

I have three now!
1/  www.comparebreakdowncover.co.uk  (0800 389 5150) at £64.99 for two weeks rescue/cover in France.

2/  [email protected]  (0117 383 0221) at £24.50/yr. – also a massive saving if you run more than one machine/car. Well worth a look anyway!!!

3/  www.marksandspencer.com   £15/month and provides great health care insurance cover up to 80 years of age! No probs for diabetics etc and loads benefits/freebies in store!

Hope this all helps, I’m also forwarding this to Paul Milner as he has been most helpfull

Kindest Regards

Ken (Lillig)

Economy Measures

In these days of financial hardship (at least for me!) I certainly can’t afford a set of new panniers for my old bike

so

Solution 1)
Buy two plastic tool boxes (B&Q) £9.00 each a couple of stickers some qd fasteners and bingo £20 and a pair of paniers these went to Germany and back a couple of months ago with no problems see pictures below:

However due to my love of fiddling and having spotted the items below on ebay at a tenner each (turned out to be ex MOD night vision equipment holders!)

Solution 2)
Strip off army khaki paint, utilize qd carriers from solution 1 and voila two waterproof “POORATECH” aluminium panniers all for the same cost as a tankful of petrol and over all 6″ narrower than my previous effort with same volume internally !

Now about that ex MOD rocket launcher I saw on ebay last week……………

Ride to Rutland

Ride to Rutland
Just another couple of  Sunday Ride pics

Apologies for not knowing all riders names (especially the chairman’s – sorry Rob!) but a day out for the pillion ladies as 7 bikes, their riders and 3 pillion passengers made their way on a beautiful April day over to Rutland Water stopping mid route at Denver Mill Restaurant/Coffee Shop (highly recommended) for supposedly coffee but some couldn’t resist the delicious food on offer and tried more filling food!

Slight confusion over where to meet on arrival at Rutland Water but eventually “flocking” to the bird reserve where the second pic was taken.

Apologies to the rest of the group for me being slightly less social than might be expected but with a brother living in Oakham some 3 miles away I had family socializing obligations to undertake.

Returning home solo later in the day and just dodging the the rain clouds and finding the Swaffham bypass filling station closed for rebuilding works I am happy to confirm the old “Duke Multi” does 220.6 miles on a tankful – no more!!! Ah well time for a nice stroll to a farmer up the road who after delivering two lambs in front of me (sorry no photos of that!) was able to produce a gallon of the necessary bringing the old Duke back to life for the last 25 mile stint home.

Sunday Morning Ride, 27th March 2011

Just a shot of perhaps the youngest rider James (pillion I hasten to add!) with somewhat older members Keith (dad) and Alex on Sunday 27th ride in front of Blickling Hall (where else!)

Plus a black rose between two thorns (bmw-ducati-bmw!)

Kind regards

David Adams
