Post What next ? FIRST or Masters
on: September 24, 2014, 20:56

I am frequently asked " What next, how can I improve, after my test "

All the information, is on the IAM website, however as an examiner, my involvement, would be conducting riding assessments, and mentoring for Masters.

I have seen some impressive riding, from many members, and am sure, some of you would attain a First, if taking an assessment.

The Masters is a big ask, for anybody, and if I was to be honest, not everybody would be suited to taking it. If you want to know more about it, feel free to chat to me, when you see me, on a meeting night, or rideout.

Driving & riding assessments

The IAM Driving/Riding Assessment is available to current IAM Members. It is a 'voluntary retest' to assess if driving and riding skills have been maintained and to identify any areas that require improvement.

The IAM Driving/Riding Assessment comprises:-
•An introductory briefing
•A period of driving/riding by the member - assessed by the examiner
•A further period of driving/riding by the member - with open discussion about it, (not instruction)
•A full debrief and written score sheet

The IAM Driving/Riding Assessment does not affect your IAM membership. However the Driving/Riding Assessment is the perfect way for an existing member to qualify for the IAM F1RST Register by meeting the qualifying score.

At the end of the assessment the examiner will give a comprehensive verbal debrief about the strengths and weaknesses of the member's driving/riding. The candidate may discuss any refresher opportunities with their local IAM group.

Members who undertake and complete an Driving/Riding Assessment will receive a certificate of completion.

How to buy your assessment

The cost of the Driving/Riding Assessment is £35

Our prices are going up from the 1st October 2014 so now is a great time to buy.

To purchase over the phone please call 0300 303 1134 quoting your IAM membership number.

The IAM Masters programme is the ultimate recognition for a civilian driver or rider to attain.

Open to all accomplished advanced drivers and riders, the IAM Masters programme provides true ‘one to one’ mentoring support and guidance that will help you attain the highest level of civilian driving standard in the country.

Building on your skills as an advanced road user already the Masters programme will help enhance and develop your ability in the following areas:
•applying cornering principles
•Assessing, planning and executing safe overtaking manoeuvres
•Recognising opportunities to make safe progress (within the speed limits)
•Improving observation, anticipation and awareness consistent with vehicle speed
•Applying sound judgement of speed and distance
•Delivering a fluent, relevant and continuous commentary

Once you and your mentor feel that you are ready we will offer you a ninety minute test comprising of theory session and extended drive or ride. To deliver a challenging environment for you the Masters test will be conducted on roads unfamiliar to you and may therefore involve travelling a fair distance from where you live. You will be scored on a series of criteria and able to achieve a pass for 70%+ and a distinction for 80%+.

The programme consists of:
•A personal logbook
•The latest copy of Roadcraft (or Motorcycle Roadcraft)
•An introductory drive or ride
•A dedicated Mentor
•Typcially up to six sessions or 10-12 hours of mentoring
•Invitation to participate in regional training and development days
•Inclusion in the Masters Register upon passing

A 'test only' option is available for those holding another advanced qualification already.

For those riders and drivers who feel that they are at the required level already a 'test only' Masters option is available. This does not include any mentoring and candidates will be expected to demonstrate a very high level of skill and knowledge based on the criteria above. Candidates must demonstrate a good knowledge of the Highway Code, Roadcraft and How to be a Better Driver/Rider.

Both the mentored programmes and the test only options are available to both IAM and non-IAM members. The prices for non members include IAM annual membership for the first year.

There are no exemptions to the Masters test.

Please be aware that the Masters is a challenging standard that is unlikely to be attained by drivers and riders who do not have any advanced driving or riding experience already.
