Post The other group ride 27/05

Myself, Chris Dade and David Peart were up early this morning...5.30am and after the obligatory full monty breakfast headed into Norwich with our bikes loaded on the car. We parked close to the cathedral and headed of on the start of the Norwich 100 cycle ride. Chris on his Specialized Allez sport, David on his Boardman carbon fibre hybrid and moi on a Cannondale Synapse Tiagra. The weather even at this time was glorious and we headed out on the Aylsham/Reepham road. It immediately became clear that some people were treating this more seriously than others....whats the point of steaming past when the lights immediately ahead are red? (and yes we did stop for them). Through Reepham and heading towards the coast we were pedalling steadilly amidst a group of about 20 riders when some of the more serious riders decided to come through....too fast for the conditions and not enough room. Almost inevitably one of them went down and stayed his just desert really and fortunately didn't take anyone else out.. After 1 3/4 hours we stopped for a break, Chris tucked into his peanut butter sandwiches and cake and we all applied sun cream. Prior to setting off I plugged myself in to the MP3 player as I knew this next section had some big hills going towards Sherringham and music always helps. We kept it steady and lots of riders came past us but they were all younger, fitter and on more expensive bikes, though one or two did seem to be working quite hard. Sheringham was the halfway stage with an obligatory 1/2 hour stop. We found a shady spot and Chris tucked in to his peanut butter sandwiches and cheese and onion roll. Suitably refreshed we set off again towards Cromer on the coast road. There was a bit of a head wind which made it hard going in places but it was nice and cool. After Mundesley David was a little way behind me when I heard lots of use of the horn. Some old bloke had gone for the stupid overtake on David and had to cut back in too early just clipping David. Fortunately he stayed upright but then the old bloke has the cheek to start drivers eh!. Onwards towards Happisburgh and along the coast to Sea Palling where after another 1 3/4 hrs, we had another break. Chris tucked in to his peanut butter sandwiches and crisps. We were now on the last section and the energy levels were getting low so had to resort to the MP3 player again. Along the coast to West Somerton, then across to Martham and down to Potter heigham and left to wards Wroxham. We passed within yards of David's house and then mine but resisted the temptation to veer off. Got to Coltishall where we had our final break and Chris tucked in to his peanut butter sadwiches and a banana. David bought an Ice cream from David's Ice cream van...had to really and then we were off again towards Norwich. Arrived at the finish at 3.30 pm having covered 100 miles. We had two 1/2 hour breaks and two 1/4 hour breaks so we cycled for 6 3/4 hours averaging a shade under 15 miles an hour....not quite tour de France standard... but more fun. Apart from car drivers, the main problems were sunburn, despite the cream, really tight neck muscles, hooray for Ibuleve, and a moderately sore back side...but then what would you expect. A brilliant day and thanks to David for suggesting it. Don't even think about it next year ' cos now I've got the T shirt and certificate, I don't need another one.
